Maintenance and enrichment
Saint-Gobain · São Paulo
Maintaining and enriching 119 hectares on a former mining site in the Cerrado.
On a Saint-Gobain mining site at Bofete, São Paulo, MORFO works 119 hectares of Cerrado: 56 hectares in maintenance and 63 in enrichment. The site is uneven, so the method starts by reading the land zone by zone, then acts only where regeneration cannot happen on its own.

Sandy, erodible soil with low organic matter and poor water retention, invasive brachiaria grass holding back natural regeneration, and a mining legacy that left variable forest structure across the site, so a single uniform recipe does not fit.

MORFO read the site by drone imaging, NDVI and soil sampling to map what could recover on its own and what could not, then combined natural regeneration with direct planting of native Cerrado species, selective fertilisation and organic-matter restoration, and nucleation islands to knit the forest structure back together. The invasive grass is managed and monitoring tracks recovery over time.

MORFO acts only where the land needs it, and says where an area will come back on its own. That is what keeps the work efficient and defensible.
